An excursion through geology, Prehistory and karst landscapes to discover some of the most fascinating natural sites in the territory of Altamura.<\/p>\n
The experience begins at the Lamalunga Visitor Centre, located about three kilometres from the city, within the territory of the Alta Murgia National Park.<\/p>\n
The centre presents the phenomenon of karst, speleology and the history of the research that led to the discovery of the cave in which the skeleton of the Man of Altamura is preserved.<\/p>\n
Minerals, fossils, speleological tools and audiovisual aids help to understand the formation of the territory. The route also includes activities dedicated to the underground world and to the orientation of bats through echolocation.<\/p>\n
From the Visitor Centre it is possible to organise excursions to some of the main points of interest in the area, including the entrance of the Grotta dell’Uomo, the Grotta della Capra and the Pulo di Altamura.<\/p>\n
The Pulo is a large karst depression, shaped over time by the action of water on the limestone rock. From above it is possible to observe its steep walls, the natural cavities and the vegetation that characterises this environment.<\/p>\n
The route combines the story of the Man of Altamura with the reading of the landscape in which he lived. It is not only about getting to know an exceptional prehistoric find, but about understanding the nature that preserved it for thousands of years.<\/p>\n
The area is part of the territory of the MurGeopark, recognised in 2025 as a UNESCO Global Geopark for the value of its geological, karst and natural heritage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
