Old Bari is the most ancient and authentic heart of the Apulian capital: a weave of alleys, courtyards, churches, arches and squares overlooking the Adriatic Sea.<\/p>\n
The walk can begin from Piazza del Ferrarese and the nearby Teatro Margherita, then continue along the ancient walls and reach the Fortino di Sant’Antonio, from which an evocative view opens over the seafront and the port.<\/p>\n
Entering the old town we discover a dense labyrinth of streets in which daily life continues to blend with history. Votive niches, courtyards, shops and houses built one next to the other accompany the walk towards the main monuments of the city.<\/p>\n
The historical itinerary promoted by the City of Bari crosses some of the most representative places of the old town, including Piazza del Ferrarese, the Fortino di Sant’Antonio, the Basilica of San Nicola, the Cathedral of San Sabino, the Swabian Castle and the Teatro Margherita.<\/p>\n
The spiritual centre of the excursion is the Basilica of San Nicola, an important meeting place between the Catholic Christian tradition and the Orthodox one. In the crypt are kept the relics of the saint, deeply linked to the identity of the city.<\/p>\n
We also visit the Cathedral of San Sabino, an important testimony of Apulian Romanesque, and observe the Norman-Swabian Castle, one of the most imposing fortified structures in Bari.<\/p>\n
The route can end along the famous orecchiette street, where you can observe the manual preparation of fresh pasta, or with a tasting of focaccia or panzerotti.<\/p>\n
