A three-day journey into the heart of Puglia to discover the thousand-year-old charm of Altamura and experience the festive atmosphere of the Putignano Carnival, considered one of the oldest carnivals in Europe.<\/p>\n
The stay has as its starting point the Hotel San Nicola, an elegant property housed in an eighteenth-century noble palace in the historic centre of Altamura. A privileged location for exploring on foot the Frederician city, its characteristic cloisters, the ancient strictule and the monuments that tell of centuries of history.<\/p>\n
During the first day we walk through the historic centre of Altamura, following the traces left by Frederick II of Swabia. We visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, with its magnificent fourteenth-century portal, and continue to the Diocesan Museum, located in the ancient medieval matronea and home to important collections of sacred art.<\/p>\n
The day concludes with a gastronomic experience in a restaurant in the historic centre, where you can savour dishes inspired by the Murgia tradition and the excellences of the territory.<\/p>\n
The second day is dedicated to Putignano and its famous Carnival. In the historic centre we let ourselves be swept up by the music, the colours, the folklore and the spectacular allegorical floats created by the masters of papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9.<\/p>\n
The documented origins of the event date back to 26 December 1394, when the transfer of the relics of Saint Stephen combined with the celebrations of the farmers engaged in tending the vines. From what is today remembered as the Festa delle Propaggini was born, over the centuries, one of the most important folk celebrations in Puglia.<\/p>\n
On the third day we return to Altamura to discover “Ciccillo”, the name affectionately given to the Man of Altamura. At Palazzo Baldassarre, a moving 3D video leads us into the depths of the karst cave in which the skeleton of a Neanderthal man dating back about 150,000 years was found.<\/p>\n
The experience concludes with a walk dedicated to the local gastronomic specialities: the Pane di Altamura DOP, the Altamura focaccia, the dairy products of the Murgia, the Tetta della Monaca and the Amaro Padre Peppe.<\/p>\n
