From Piazza del Ferrarese we set off along the ancient medieval walls, accompanied by a splendid view over the Adriatic Sea and the port of Bari, for centuries one of the Mediterranean’s main points of connection.

Towards the interior opens the characteristic labyrinth of Old Bari. Its streets preserve the traces of the civilisations that followed one another over the centuries and tell of the deep spirituality of a city that has always been a meeting point between East and West.

Among the most important monuments we come across the Cathedral of San Sabino, one of the leading examples of Apulian Romanesque architecture, and the Swabian Castle, built in the 12th century by Roger II and later rebuilt and enlarged at the behest of Frederick II of Swabia.

The spiritual heart of the city is the Basilica of San Nicola, an extraordinary masterpiece of Apulian Romanesque. Its evocative crypt holds the relics of the saint, which arrived in Bari in 1087. San Nicola is venerated by both the Catholic and the Orthodox Church, and his figure inspired, in the English-speaking world, the character of Santa Claus, known in Italy as Babbo Natale.

Alongside history and spirituality, Old Bari preserves an authentic gastronomic culture deeply tied to the daily life of its inhabitants.

Strolling through the narrow streets we can watch the women of Bari making the traditional orecchiette by hand. From the bakeries and fry shops comes the aroma of freshly prepared focaccia and panzerotti, while the restaurants of the historic centre celebrate the fresh catch, octopus and seafood of the Adriatic.

The experience can be rounded off by choosing one of the two gastronomic options: a tasting of panzerotti with a sea view or a lunch dedicated to fish specialities, straight from the sea to the plate.

In Old Bari the boundary between sacred and profane is thin: an engaging walk to be experienced through the art, faith, traditions and most authentic flavours of the city.

Old Bari is a place where history, faith, folk traditions and gastronomy come together in a fascinating interweaving of alleyways, squares, Romanesque churches and irresistible aromas.
