Depending on the schedule and the needs of the group, a visit to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta can also be included.

The first gastronomic experience is dedicated to the cheeses of the Alta Murgia. At a historic family-run dairy we discover the bond between the Murgia pastures, livestock farming and the quality of local products.

The Alta Murgia is characterised by a karst landscape rich in biodiversity, pastures and spontaneous aromatic herbs. Since 2025 the territory of the Alta Murgia National Park has been part of the MurGeopark, recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark.

During the visit to the dairy we watch a demonstration dedicated to the production of dairy products such as mozzarella, scamorza and burrata. The experience ends with a tasting of cheeses and typical products, according to the agreed arrangement.

The walk continues, following the irresistible scent of Pane di Altamura DOP. In an ancient bakery in the old town we discover the social and cultural value of bread-making and taste bread, focaccia and other freshly baked specialities.

The Antico Forno Santa Caterina may be involved for this stop. The available sources do not report the exact year of foundation in a uniform way, referring both to 1306 and to 1391; in commercial communication it is therefore preferable to describe it simply as an “ancient historic bakery”.

The next stop is dedicated to the Tetta della Monaca, also known as sospiro: a soft, delicate pastry linked to the convent tradition of Altamura.

The tasting can take place at the Antica Pasticceria delle Monache, located next to the Monastery of Santa Chiara in the old town and active, according to its own communication, since 1597.

We conclude the itinerary at the historic Caffè Ronchi Striccoli, in the heart of Altamura, with a coffee and a taste of Padre Peppe, the famous walnut elixir linked to the tradition of the Striccoli family.

A perfect finale for a journey through authentic flavours, historic shops and stories handed down through generations.

Altamura is not only an extraordinary treasure of history and culture, but also a city rich in gastronomic excellence and ancient artisan traditions.
