Altamura rises on the karst landscape of the Alta Murgia, a territory shaped by nature and inhabited by humans since Prehistory.<\/p>\n
The guided visit accompanies the participants on a journey through the millennia, from the testimonies of the Man of Altamura to the medieval city re-founded by Frederick II of Swabia.<\/p>\n
Strolling in the historic centre we encounter the characteristic claustri, small enclosed courtyards around which the life of the ancient communities developed, and the narrow streets called “strictule”. These spaces tell of the coexistence among the different populations that contributed to the growth of the Frederician city. The City of Altamura links the medieval rebirth of the city to the figure of Frederick II, to the construction of the Cathedral and to the arrival of different communities in the districts organised around the claustri.<\/p>\n
The monumental heart of the itinerary is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, one of the symbols of the city. We admire the fa\u00e7ade, the magnificent 14th-century portal and the interior rich in artistic and religious testimonies.<\/p>\n
The route can continue at Palazzo Baldassarre, with the multimedia experience dedicated to the Man of Altamura, or in the Diocesan Museum, housed in the ancient medieval matronea.<\/p>\n
