Matera is a city carved into the rock, a place where landscape, architecture and human presence have intertwined for millennia.<\/p>\n
The excursion leads to the discovery of the ancient Sassi districts, formed by the Sasso Caveoso and the Sasso Barisano. Dwellings carved into the stone, alleyways, terraces, cisterns and rock churches make up a unique setting, shaped over the centuries by humankind’s ability to adapt to the territory.<\/p>\n
The Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera are recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site includes the ancient urban centre and the plateau located on the opposite side of the ravine, with evidence of a long and continuous human presence.<\/p>\n
The walk can begin from one of the panoramic points in the centre, from which a spectacular view over the city of stone opens up. We then descend into the labyrinth of the Sassi, observing the complex water collection system and the way the dwellings were built one on top of another.<\/p>\n
We visit a cave-house, a testimony to the daily life of Matera’s families, and a rock church decorated with ancient frescoes, if included in the selected package.<\/p>\n
The route may also include Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the Civita, the Cathedral of Matera and some of the most evocative viewpoints.<\/p>\n
