Gravina in Puglia is a city built on the edge of a deep canyon, where nature, history and rock architecture blend into a surprising landscape.<\/p>\n
The very name of the city recalls the deep cleft carved into the limestone rock by the action of water. Along the walls of the ravine you can still see caves, rock settlements and places of worship that testify to a thousand-year relationship between humans and the land.<\/p>\n
The symbol of the city is the Aqueduct Bridge, a scenic arched structure that crosses the canyon and connects the built-up centre with the rock area. The City’s tourist portal describes Gravina as a city shaped by water and recognises in the Aqueduct Bridge the element that unites the ancient settlements, the landscape of the Alta Murgia and the modern city.<\/p>\n
During the walk we visit the historic centre, crossing alleys, squares and districts built in stone. We reach the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, overlooking the ravine, and observe the view from the main viewpoints.<\/p>\n
The route can continue in the rock area of Botromagno or in the Fondovito district, with the visit of churches carved into the rock, hypogea and ancient spaces used by the community.<\/p>\n
Gravina also preserves a strong bond with the Orsini family and with Pietro Francesco Orsini, who became Pope Benedict XIII.<\/p>\n
